Amplifying Our Voices: Advocacy Training Workshop

One effectual way to amplify your advocacy voice is to learn how to engage elected officials and effectively use advocacy tools to influence members of Congress.  In this workshop, presented by St. Ignatius Catholic Community Justice & Peace Committee, you will learn how to advocate for policies and issues you are passionate about and discuss strategies to address pending legislation impacting your com­munity.  Influence your legislators in Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington by joining a community of people working for justice and peace. A light meal will be available at 5:30 PM; the workshop is from 6 – 9 PM.  To register, email Candra Healy at chealy@loyola.edu .

5:30 – 6 Dinner

6 – 6:40 Introductions of the Team and All Participants – Also answer: What Advocacy have you been involved in? What might be a barrier to advocacy?

6:40 – 6:55 PowerPoint Presentation: Parish Mobilization

6:55 – 7:15 Power Point Presentation: Face-to-Face Meetings with Policymakers

7:15 – 7:45 Small group break-outs and discussion in one of 3 Topic Areas.  Each group will be provided with talking points and backgrounders to discuss the issues and policies, and using what they have learned: prepare a presentation, decide on presenters, practice, and present to a legislator:

Topic Areas:  Immigration {Dream Act of 2017 and Detention and Deportation Funding}; Economic Justice {Paid Sick Leave and Fight for $15}; Mass Incarceration {Racially Just Criminal Justice System & Restorative Justice}

7:45 – 7:50 SET – UP LEGISLATOR OFFICE

7:50 – 8:35 Role Play:– Each group gets 10 minutes to present and a 5 minute Critique by the Larger Group – (Legislators: US Congressional Counsel & Legislative Assistant, MD Assembly State Senator, U.S. Senator

8:35 – 9 Summary & Closing Remarks – And sign up for a follow-up activity
